Knitting Update: The Fancy-but-Boring-Shawl
So one thing I did with my tax return money was invest a small chunk of it in some really fancy yarn. Ashley at Elegance Designer Yarn in Pasadena had this pretty hand-dyed two-strand Italian mohair and silk/rayon yarn. It is sooo pretty and she had the loveliest shawl made from that yarn on display.

Ever since I first draped that shawl around my shoulders 3 months ago, I have wanted to make one like it. The pattern is very simple. It is: Knit 18 stitches. Add one stitch at the beginning of each Row until the shawl is 98 stitches wide. The only problem is, it's too simple! I am bored knitting this shawl. So I still need to finish it.

Adventures in Sewing:The Dress Form
Last Saturday when my mother came down to go to the Central Library with us, I was telling her how I'd been stalled on my sewing projects for quite a while, so, in no time at all, she had run out the last tow curtains I needed, and cut out a shirt I'd been meaning to sew for months. The shirt was striped knit (mom is COD about stripes. She matches them so well at the seams, you can hardly tell there's a seam there at all) and I had not sewn knit before. Mom gave me good instructions and in no time at all, I'd sewn the shirt.

I was so proud of myself, until I tried the shirt on. It was too big. I was very upset by this, because Mom had cut out the pattern size that was supposed to go with my measurements, so everything should have been just fine. But it wasn't. I had to go back and alter the shirt until it fit.

My mother says that the reason she never sews for herself is that she hates not being able to fit a garment as she sews (which she can do when she's sewing for someone else). Looking back over my own rather limited experience with sewing, I realized that my most rewarding sewing experience had been sewing the Chioiserie Shirt for Angela because I'd been able to fit it as I went along, and when it was finished, it fit perfectly.

So, I used another small chunk of my tax return to order an adjustable dress form from JoAnn's website. It should arrive in a week or so. I'm very excited. I plan on lending the dress form to my mother for a while so she'll finally be able to sew for herself.
